Don’t get hung up on the idea that to maximize your charisma is to achieve perfection, that being able to influence people is itself the goal of life. Personal magnetism comes in many flavors and can be used for good or ill. And, in truth, charisma is a two-edged sword. Franklin Roosevelt, clearly both a charming and a charismatic man, could excite an audience hungry for reassurance—but so could the decidedly less charming Adolph Hitler or Charles Manson. Thus, charisma clearly can be used for good or evil, be it, say, by the Reverend Billy Graham, who’s inspired millions, or the Reverend Jim Jones, who led hundreds of followers to mass suicide. At its best, charisma is a marvelously helpful tool in almost any endeavor. But that’s just what it is—a tool. And a tool must be used for the right purpose and in conjunction with our brains, our wisdom, and our morals.

Hi Lindarinchuiso (Linda, I presume?), and thanks for your note. This is the first in a series of articles on Charisma from Tony - be sure to check back for more! You’re right, charisma (and other leadership skills and traits) can be used in the wrong ways or for the wrong reasons. I’m sure that Tony’s research includes quite a few examples of that, even if he didn’t mention it here. He focuses on the aspects of the relationship that physically, emotionally, or intellectually connects you with another person and gives you the ability to influence them – and as you point out, this ability can be twisted. How does the phrase go? “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely?” And I like the phrase, “With great power, comes responsibility,” which can be attributed to both Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Spiderman movie series.Either way, Tony’s article and his expertise provide a blueprint for improving your relationships by focusing on the skill of charisma. Ultimately, how you use that skill is up to you. You make a great point!

Your definition of charisma offers a very one sided opinion. To be fair to your readers ( first time) you should make them aware that yes it is the ability to influence but not always positively. Charisma has a dark side too and is determined by ones values and personality. Hitler and Jim Jones were charismatic leaders. It is the reason so many followed even to the point of death. Your seven components state some traits of good leadership but not necessarily charisma.
